Japan plans to deploy mobile biometric terminals at airports to take photos and fingerprints of foreign visitors, cutting down the processing time at the immigration desk. The terminals, called Biocart, will be installed at all airports with international operations, from April 2016. Toshiba to deliver propulsion equipment for Seibu Railway’s new trains in Tokyo

Toshiba has secured a contract from Tokyo’s private firm Seibu Railway to provide high-performance propulsion systems for new Series 40,000 trains, which will enter into service on lines serving Tokyo, Japan, and its suburbs in early 2017. The propulsion systems include totally enclosed permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and four-in-one, variable-voltage, variable-frequency (VVVF) traction inverters. Japanese railway cameras automatically spot drunk commuters to save their lives

Drunk commuters tumbling into trains is a serious issue in Japan. In 2013 there were 221 cases of passengers getting hit by trains while either on the platform or having fallen onto the tracks, with 60 percent of these caused by drunkenness. To help combat this problem, railway operator JR West is introducing surveillance cameras on platforms that automatically detect if someone is drunk. The cameras look for signs of inebriation like staying on a bench for a long time or weaving across the platform, and alert station attendants who can check if the individual needs help.
